Find the next web page

There are a couple of sites like this, but this one (apparently called N) is pretty good. The idea is you have to figure out the URL of the next web page in the numerical series, which starts at 1 and goes to 30. The way to get from one page to the next changes each time.

Some of these are pretty tough. Wikipedia is helpful in a couple of instances, and you will also need to look at the source code for a few of them.

Keep in mind that each one gives you a clue as to how its URL would be derived, but you’re really looking for the next one in the series.

Another thing: on the internets, Nineteen.html is a different page than nineteen.html or NINETEEN.html.

How far can you get? I can post hints for ones you get really stuck on.

I got up to 2, then was distracted by shiny things in my office.

Well, it’s unanimous. Your mom has been trying to figure out your genius mind for 34.9 years, me for about 15, and still you have the power to vex.

Mom, here are some hypothetical examples (which might also be useful to others):

If the text of the website said “3_french_hens”, the next URL in the sequence might be http://n.nfshost.com/4_calling_birds.html

If the text of the website said “siete”, the next URL in the sequence might be http://n.nfshost.com/ocho.html

I am stuck on 16. I am in 15 and can’t figure out the next one. SOS, ASAP!

Did you get them all?

Gravatar

diana said,

I’m puzzling over 19, which I possibly already (didn’t) found(/find), in which case I’m puzzling over 20. I may grovel for a small clue, but as for now I’m content with pulling out my hair.

diana said,

ok, here’s a question: did I or didn’t I find 19?

Gravatar

diana said,

where did you go? please come back. please tell me if I did or didn’t find 19.

Gravatar

diana said,

fine. I am stuck in the black hole of 18 4-ever. maybe the way out will come to me in my dreams. and even if I already did “find” 19, i still don’t understand it.

19 is very tough. Maybe you have solved 19, but it keeps taking you back to 18 instantaneously. If only there was a way to save a page without opening it…

Me and mom, we don’t get it.

monoglot said,

Emily, the deal is to manually change the URL to get to the next number in the sequence defined by what’s on the page. If the page (or some part of the page) said NEETRIHT, to get to the next clue you would go to http://n.nfshost.com/NEETRUOF.html

OOOHhhh, I get it. This is fun!

I’m stuck at the same one as Neil. Boo. Oct, Octo…hmm.

Do I need to install the library for 21? Secondly, can you explain 20? I found it via cheating. You can tell me on email if you don’t want to corrupt the comment page. It doesn’t look like it’s a particular URL function, based on my extensive research. You know, maybe it would be clear to me if I’d ever seen 19. Was I supposed to be able to edit the source, or what?

Why doesn’t 10 show anything on my screen?

Gravatar

monoglot said,

July 16, 2006 @ 5:19 pm

Regarding 20: You can download web pages (i.e., without opening them) by right-clicking or control-clicking on them, after which you can open them in a text editor. If only there was a way to get the link you need onto a webpage so you could control-click on it…

Regarding 10: the text may be the same color as the background.

Regarding 21: no library needed. notice how far the letters are from where they should be. notice it in each direction.

Ryan. Are you there right now?

Gravatar

diana said,

July 16, 2006 @ 10:24 pm

Because if you were then I would tell you that I don’t know what you’re talking about because your clue seems useful to finding 20 from 19, but I am on twenty-one.

diana said,

But totally don’t worry about it because now I am on 22. This game reminds me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, vaguely.

Gravatar

diana said,

July 17, 2006 @ 12:35 am

done. I didn’t exaaaaactly get them all by myself, but I got 30 (for now). Please explain how one is supposed to get to 23 from 22, 26 from 25, and 28 from 27. Thanks.

beth said,

diana, i see what you mean about the clue being helpful for 19-20 and not 20-21. and now i’m stuck again.

Gravatar

diana said,

July 21, 2006 @ 7:55 am

Beth: The formatting/style for 21 is the same as for 20 (on the screen, not the URL). Just modify it for the new number and drop the extension.
